Ordinance Banning Use of Fireworks in 2011

At the regular city council meeting held June 14, 2011 city council voted to ban the use of “all fireworks, firecrackers, torpedoes, roman candles, skyrockets, and other pyrotechnic displays within the municip0al limits of the city of Rock Ford” until December 31, 2011.

It was previously announced that Fireworks would not be sold within city limits and that there will not be a fireworks display this year at Babcock Park due to the extreme fire danger. These safety precautions are being taken due to “very dry conditions” and are a matter of the “health, welfare and safety of the citizens of Rocky Ford and their property.”

Those convicted in violation of the ordinance face fines of $100-300 dollars for each offense. It was discussed at the meeting that each firework, or pyrotechnic is a separate offense. It was also clarified that fireworks include sparklers, fountains, and fireworks of ALL kinds, not only those that shoot into the air.

The second reading of the ordinance will be at the next city council meeting, June 28, at 7 p.m.

Fireworks Banned: A Letter from Fire Chief Gary Cox

June 7, 2011

RE: Sale of Fireworks and Permits

Due to the severe drought condition in the City of Rocky Ford and Otero County the permits required by the City of Rocky Ford to sell or use any type of Fireworks within the City limits of Rocky Ford will be prohibited for the year 2011. Rocky Ford Fire Chief Gary Cox has determined that the sale and use of Fireworks would not provide a safe and healthy environment for the citizens of Rocky Ford.

The Rocky Ford Fire Department and the members have determined, do to the drought conditions and the Stage 1 restrictions that Otero County has implemented that the July 4th 2011 Fireworks show has been cancelled. The Fire Department feels it would be unwise to subject the citizens of Rocky Ford to an event that could possibly destroy lives and property.
